Choosing a developer is where film photographers spend more time searching than actually understanding what's going on. Forums pile up contradictory opinions, datasheets read like stereo manuals, and most people end up buying whatever they've seen mentioned most often without really knowing why. This article doesn't cover every developer out there, but it tries to answer one specific question: given what you're shooting and the look you're after, which one should you start with, or switch to?

What the Developer Actually Changes

A fine-grain developer compresses detail into a uniform smoothness. These two effects tend to be inversely proportional: the finer the grain, the less bite you get at the edges.

Fine-Grain Developers: Perceptol and ADOX FX-39 II
Ilford Perceptol is the classic example of a fine-grain developer. Who's it for? A portrait photographer working in medium or large format probably doesn't need either of these, since grain isn't a concern at those sizes anyway. But in 35mm with a slow film like Ilford Pan F (ISO 50), Perceptol or FX-39 II lets you produce negatives you can enlarge to sizes that would otherwise be unrealistic for the format. It's also the right call for anyone shooting mostly in the studio with stationary subjects and controlled light.
Acutance Developers: Rodinal and HC-110
Rodinal
Rodinal is the oldest developer still in active production, in a form that's more or less identical to the original. It works at very high dilutions, typically 1+50 or 1+100, sometimes even further out for minimal-agitation processing (what most of us call stand development). At those concentrations, development is mostly local: each grain develops within its own small cloud of exhausted chemistry, which exaggerates tonal transitions and produces that characteristic, gritty, unmistakable grain.
That's precisely what divides people on Rodinal. With a slow, low-ISO film stock the grain stays manageable and the acutance is spectacular. With a faster film like HP5 at ISO 400 or above, the grain gets coarse and structured in a way that some photographers love and others find excessive.
Comparing it directly to D-76 (see below) has become a forum classic, and the "Rodinal vs. D-76" debate remains relevant because it illustrates the two extremes well: on one side, versatile smoothness; on the other, biting acutance. They're not the same tool and they're not for the same job.

And anyone who develops only a handful of rolls a year will appreciate its shelf life: an opened bottle stays good for years as long as you keep oxygen out.
HC-110 and Euro HC
HC-110 (Kodak) and its more widely distributed European equivalent, Euro HC, are concentrated liquid developers that give you good acutance without going as far as Rodinal. The grain is finer, the contrast curve a bit more balanced. HC-110's Dilution B (1+31) is the standard starting point for most common film stocks.
These are working developers, quick to mix, forgiving on temperature, and they produce dense, easy-to-print negatives. For anyone processing a lot of rolls in a short time, the liquid concentrate is a real practical advantage over powder chemistry.
The All-Around Developer: D-76 and ID-11
Kodak's D-76 and its near-identical twin, Ilford's ID-11, have been the reference point for decades for a simple reason: they give solid results on just about everything. Reasonable grain, honest acutance, generous highlight latitude. They don't excel in any particular category, but they rarely let you down either.
Used stock (1+0), D-76 gives the finest grain of the two dilutions, with slight shadow compression. Diluted 1+1, it gains acutance and shadow detail at the cost of slightly more visible grain. Most photographers using D-76 work at 1+1 for exactly that reason.
Its main weakness is that it has no personality. If you want an image with a recognizable visual signature, D-76 isn't going to give you one. But if you want a reliable tool for learning, for working across a variety of film stocks without constant recalibration, or for producing negatives that someone else is going to scan or enlarge, this is it.
Who's it for? The generalist photographer, the beginner who wants a stable reference point, and the working or semi-professional who's handing off negatives and doesn't want their developer to be the unpredictable variable.
Eco-Conscious Alternatives: Bellini Ecofilm and Caffenol
Bellini Ecofilm
Bellini Ecofilm is marketed as a low-environmental-impact developer. The formula isn't fully disclosed, but the results on common film stocks (HP5, Delta 400, Tri-X) show moderate grain and a gentle curve, close to a D-76 with slightly less contrast. It's a solid choice for anyone who wants to reduce their chemical footprint without giving up predictable results. Development times are in the usual range, and the manufacturer's data sheets are well documented.
Caffenol
Caffenol is something else entirely. It's a developer you mix yourself from instant coffee, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and washing soda. Yes, it actually works. No, it's not a joke or a hobbyist novelty.
The results depend heavily on the proportions, the film stock, and the temperature. There are several established recipes (Caffenol-C, Caffenol-C-M, and so on) and an active community that documents them thoroughly. On something like HP5 or Tri-X, Caffenol gives slightly softer grain than Rodinal, with a curve that holds together well in the highlights.
A few honest caveats: reproducibility is less predictable than with commercial developers, the smell of coffee in the darkroom is pleasant enough at first and considerably less so after an hour, and development times tend to run long. But for anyone who wants to understand the process at its foundations, or who simply doesn't have access to a photo supply chain, it's a genuine option.
